We carry out natural slate roofing installation and repair across Edinburgh and the Lothians. Established in 2013, with a dedicated in-house team of slaters and our own cherry picker access equipment, we deliver quality slate work at competitive pricing. We own the plant, so you don't pay hire costs.
Edinburgh's older properties were built for slate. It's the material these roofs were designed around, and it's still the best choice for durability and appearance. A correctly installed natural slate roof can last 75 to 100+ years depending on slate grade and installation quality. It's also the expected material in many of Edinburgh's conservation areas, where a like-for-like slate replacement or repair is usually expected to meet planning requirements.
Our team understands local roof pitches and traditional flashing details, and knows the common failure points that come with age, from delaminating slates and corroded fixings to sarking boards that have broken down over decades. Our workmanship standards are underpinned by ISO 9001 quality management certification. We approach every conservation-sensitive property with the care it requires.
Independently audited and certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards for quality, environmental and occupational health & safety management.

Poor fixings cause more premature slate failure than the slate itself. Wrong nail material and incorrect batten gauge save minutes on site and cost thousands in early repairs. We use copper or stainless steel nails as appropriate to the slate type and exposure. Batten gauge is specified for every job based on the slate dimensions and roof pitch
Get the gauge wrong and slates start slipping within years. We avoid standard galvanised fixings in exposed or long-life applications, as they can corrode prematurely in Edinburgh's wet maritime climate
We install all major natural and synthetic slate types across Edinburgh and the Lothians. We'll recommend the right slate for your property, budget, and any conservation-area constraints at survey stage.
| Slate type | Best for | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Welsh slate (Penrhyn) | High-end properties, conservation work | Premium grade with an exceptionally long lifespan. Finish is paramount. | |
| Spanish slate | Cost-effective option, widely used across Edinburgh | Range of sizes and thicknesses. Performs well at a lower price. | |
| Historic Scottish slate | Authentic restoration of period properties | Originally from Ballachulish, Easdale and similar quarries. Reclaimed stock only, early sourcing essential. | |
| Reclaimed slate | Partial re-slating, insurance repairs | Sourced to match existing roofs. |
Every slate installation follows the same rigorous process. Edinburgh's weather demands it — over 700mm of rain a year, exposed to westerly Atlantic weather. A roof that cuts corners on felt, battens or fixings will fail. Ours don't.
We assess the full roof structure (battens, membrane, rafters, slates) and specify the correct slate type and fixing system for the job.
We deploy our own cherry picker or hire in scaffolding as required. Owning our cherry picker means faster mobilisation, helping keep costs down.
Old slates and battens are removed. The deck and structure are inspected, breathable membrane or traditional felt renewed as appropriate to ventilation requirements, and new treated battens fixed to the correct gauge. A typical tenement flat re-slate takes 3 to 5 working days; a full detached villa roof may take 2 to 3 weeks depending on complexity.
Slates are laid from eaves to ridge, double-nailed as standard in line with BS 5534, with copper or stainless fixings. Lead or appropriate metal flashings, ridge and hip details are completed to specification.
The site is cleared, we photograph the finished roof and walk you through the completed work. Every job has a written specification, a pre-completion inspection checklist, and a signed-off quality record you receive at handover.
Slate roofing costs depend on roof size, access, slate grade and structural condition. Welsh slate projects start higher than Spanish slate equivalents. Exact pricing requires a survey.
We provide a detailed written quote after a free, no-obligation survey. Because we own our cherry picker, we don't hire in platforms for jobs where it's suitable. Our quotes are itemised line by line. No hidden charges.
We come to your property, walk the roof or inspect from our cherry picker, photograph everything, and discuss what you want. Within 24 hours of your call where possible.
Full report sent to you, including photos of any defects, repairs needed, and slate condition. Works as your record whether you proceed with us or not.
Every line itemised: materials, labour, access, waste disposal, VAT. No hidden extras. If we discover something during the work that wasn't visible at survey, we agree it with you before proceeding.
No pressure, no chase calls. Take your time, compare with other quotes, ask questions. We'll only follow up if you ask us to.
We carry out slate roofing work across Edinburgh, including but not limited to Marchmont, Morningside, Leith, Stockbridge, Bruntsfield, Corstorphine, Portobello, Newington, Gorgie, Dalry, Comely Bank, Trinity and the New Town.
