About Altitude

Edinburgh's roofers, since 2014.

Altitude was founded to do roofing differently in Edinburgh. We own our access equipment, cherry picker and rope access, instead of hiring it in. That single decision saves our customers £400–£800 on every typical job, gets us on the roof days sooner, and lets us work with no third-party delays.

Ten years and 500+ jobs later, we cover every part of an Edinburgh roof: slate and tile installation, chimney rebuilds, lead work, full re-roofs, gutter installation, repairs and maintenance. We work on Victorian tenements in Marchmont, Georgian townhouses in the New Town, post-war semis in Corstorphine, and everything in between. Every job is done by our own five-person team. No subcontractors, no surprises.

If you're researching a roofer in Edinburgh, we'd encourage you to compare quotes. Most contractors will hire in scaffolding or access equipment and pass that cost to you. We won't. Our quote is itemised, fixed-price, and what you see is what you pay.

Roofing in Edinburgh

Built for Edinburgh stone.

Edinburgh has more natural slate roofs per square mile than almost anywhere else in Scotland. The Georgian terraces of the New Town, Victorian tenements of Marchmont and Bruntsfield, stone-built semis of Morningside and Stockbridge, they were all designed with slate in mind. Get a slate roof right and it lasts longer than the building it covers. Get it wrong, and you'll be dealing with slipped slates and damp issues within a decade.

Modern Edinburgh roofing means knowing how to work on heritage stock without damaging it, and on post-war stock without overspecifying. It means understanding the city's freeze-thaw cycles, the 700mm of annual rainfall driven by westerly Atlantic weather, and the conservation area rules that cover the New Town, Old Town, Marchmont, Morningside, Trinity, Portobello and 50+ other neighbourhoods. We've done it for ten years.

That experience shapes every quote we write. We know which slates and tiles last on Edinburgh roofs and which don't. We know when lime mortar is non-negotiable. We know which dormers leak from poor lead detailing rather than from the roof itself. And we know which roofs need a £350 repair instead of the full re-roof some contractors will quote.

Why Altitude

We own our equipment. You save money.

Most roofing contractors in Edinburgh hire in cherry pickers and scaffolding and pass that cost straight to you. We own ours.

Faster start dates, no third-party delays, and jobs that typically cost £400–£800 less than quotes from contractors who don't own their own gear. The kind of saving that's hard to argue with.

Do I really need scaffolding for a roof job in Edinburgh?
Not with Altitude. We use our own cherry picker and rope access to reach your roof safely without erecting scaffold, saving you £400–800 and the 2–3 week wait most scaffolding contractors need before work can begin. The exception is some commercial and high-rise jobs where scaffold is the right tool.
How quickly can you visit for a free survey?
In most cases within 24–48 hours of your call. For genuine emergencies such as water coming through a ceiling or slates blown off in a storm, we aim to be on-site the same day. We're available 7 days a week, no premium charges for weekend visits.
What's the difference between repair, partial re-roof and full replacement?
A repair fixes specific failures (slipped slates, broken tiles, leaking flashings). A partial re-roof renews one pitch or section. A full replacement strips the roof to bare rafters and starts again. Which makes sense depends on roof age, percentage of failing materials and the condition of felt and battens. We'll tell you honestly at survey, not push the most expensive option.
Are you insured? What guarantees do you offer?
We carry full public liability insurance and issue a written workmanship guarantee on the day every job is completed. Materials carry their own manufacturer warranties on top of that, typically 25 years on tiles, 30+ years on EPDM flat roofing, and 80+ years on natural slate.
Do you work on listed buildings and conservation areas?
Yes, regularly. Edinburgh has 50+ conservation areas and we work in most of them. Like-for-like residential roof replacements typically don't require planning permission, but listed buildings do. We can advise on Edinburgh City Council's specific requirements at survey stage.
How do your prices compare?
Our quotes typically come in £400–£800 below contractors who hire in scaffolding or access equipment. We don't claim to be the cheapest in Edinburgh, we claim to be honestly priced for the work specified, with no hidden extras. Every quote is fixed-price, itemised, and valid 30 days. Compare like-for-like and you'll see the difference.
